Eco Printing on Paper with Leaves: A Simple Beginner Method

Leaves are beautiful enough on their own, but eco printing gives you a way to capture some of their shape, veins and natural colour on paper.
Unlike painting a leaf and pressing it onto paper, eco printing uses the pigments and tannins already present in the plant. Leaves are placed directly against damp paper, tightly compressed and heated with steam. As the bundle warms, some of those natural compounds transfer onto the paper.
The results are wonderfully unpredictable. One leaf might leave a delicate golden outline, another a deep brown silhouette, while some create only the faintest botanical shadow.

What is eco printing?
Eco printing, sometimes called botanical printing or ecoprinting, is a form of natural printing that transfers colour and botanical markings directly from plant material onto another surface.
Instead of adding paint or printing ink, the leaf itself provides the colour.
Heat, moisture and close contact help release the natural pigments and tannins from the plant material. Because every leaf contains a slightly different combination of these compounds, results vary enormously.
That unpredictability is part of the appeal.
You are not trying to reproduce a perfectly identical print every time. You are letting the plant determine part of the finished artwork.
What you need
You do not need specialist printing equipment to experiment with eco printing on paper.
Fresh or rehydrated leaves
Heavy watercolour or printmaking paper
Water
Alum for pre-treating the paper
A shallow tray or bowl
Two old ceramic tiles or other heat-safe flat surfaces
String or strong clips
A steamer or large pan with a steaming rack
Tongs
Gloves
An old towel
Use equipment dedicated to craft and dye projects rather than cookware that will later be used for food.
What paper works best for eco printing?
Paper has to survive quite a lot during eco printing: soaking, pressure, heat and steam.
For beginners, I recommend relatively heavy paper.
Watercolour paper is easy to find and works particularly well. Printmaking paper is another excellent option because it is designed to cope with moisture and pressure.
Very thin printer paper is much more likely to tear or become distorted.
A slightly textured paper can also make the finished prints feel particularly beautiful and handmade.
Which leaves are best for eco printing?
Not every green leaf will produce a green print.
The colour you see on the plant is not necessarily the colour you will get on the paper.
Leaves containing plenty of tannins often produce some of the strongest botanical prints.
Oak
Maple
Rose
Blackberry
Eucalyptus
Geranium
Walnut
Beech
But one of the best parts of eco printing is testing plants from your own garden.
Keep a few notes as you experiment. Write down which leaves you used, when you collected them and what colour they produced.
Over time, you can build your own little botanical printing reference library.
Fresh or dried leaves?
Both can work.
Fresh leaves are the easiest place to start because they already contain moisture.
Dried autumn leaves can also produce beautiful prints, particularly tannin-rich leaves such as oak. Soak dried leaves in water first until they become flexible again.
This makes eco printing a particularly interesting autumn craft: fallen leaves that would normally disappear into the compost heap can become permanent botanical artwork instead.

Step 1: Prepare the paper
Eco printers often pre-treat paper with a mordant.
A mordant helps natural colour attach more effectively to the paper. Alum is one of the most commonly used options for paper eco printing.
Dissolve the alum in warm water according to the manufacturer's instructions and soak your paper in the solution.
Handle wet paper carefully as it becomes much more fragile.
For your first experiment, prepare several smaller sheets rather than one large piece. This lets you test several different leaves at once.
Step 2: Prepare your leaves
Freshly picked leaves can usually be used straight away after a quick rinse.
If they feel dry, soak them briefly in water.
Dried leaves should be soaked until they become pliable again.
Look closely at both sides of each leaf. The underside usually has more pronounced veins, which can create particularly interesting botanical details when pressed against the paper.
Step 3: Arrange the leaves
Lay one damp sheet of prepared paper on your work surface.
Arrange your leaves across it.
Try placing some vein-side down and others vein-side up. This is a simple way to learn how each side affects the print.
Avoid overcrowding the page. Negative space around a leaf can be just as beautiful as the print itself.
When you are happy with the arrangement, place another damp sheet of paper over the top.
You now have a botanical sandwich: paper, leaves, paper.
Step 4: Build your eco-print bundle
Good contact between the leaf and paper is essential.
Place your paper sandwich between two old ceramic tiles or another pair of flat, heat-safe surfaces.
Press everything together firmly and secure the bundle with string or strong clips.
The tighter the contact, the greater the chance of capturing the veins and outline of the leaf.
You can stack several layers of paper and leaves in one bundle, but for your first attempt I would keep things fairly small and simple.
Step 5: Steam the bundle
Place the bundle inside a steamer above the water rather than directly in it.
Cover and steam gently for approximately 45–60 minutes.
Different plants, papers and techniques respond differently, so there is no single magic steaming time. Think of your first few bundles as experiments rather than expecting identical results.
Keep an eye on the water level and add more hot water if necessary.
Always take care around steam and hot equipment.
Step 6: Let it cool
Once steaming is complete, remove the bundle carefully using tongs.
Leave it somewhere heat-safe until it has cooled.
This is the difficult part: resisting the temptation to open it immediately.
Allowing the bundle to cool gives the plant material and paper a little more time together.
Step 7: The reveal
Open the bundle and gently peel the leaves away from the paper.
Some prints may be crisp and recognisable.
Others may look like ghostly shadows, stains or fragments of veins.
You may also notice that the two sheets touching the same leaf look completely different.
That is normal.
Eco printing is less about controlling every detail and more about discovering what each plant can do.
Why did my leaves barely print?
A disappointing first bundle does not necessarily mean you did anything wrong.
Several things affect botanical printing.
The plant may simply contain very little useful dye or tannin.
The leaf may not have been pressed tightly enough against the paper.
The paper may have been too dry.
Or that particular plant may respond better later in the season.
Try the same leaf again alongside a few different species. Comparing results is often the fastest way to learn.
Can you change the colour of eco prints?
Yes, and this is where botanical printing can become surprisingly experimental.
Experienced natural dyers use different mordants and modifiers to influence plant colours. Iron, for example, can dramatically darken tannin-rich leaves and create charcoal, grey and almost black botanical prints.
But you certainly do not need these additional materials for your first eco-printing project.
Start with leaves, paper, alum and steam.
Once you understand how your local plants behave naturally, experimenting with modifiers becomes much more interesting.

Keep a botanical printing journal
One of the nicest ways to explore eco printing is to stop thinking about each print as a finished artwork.
Instead, make small test sheets.
Add the plant name underneath.
Record the date and whether the leaf was fresh, dried or fallen.
Plants can behave differently during different stages of the growing season, so the same tree may give you different results in spring and autumn.
After a year, you will have something far more interesting than a collection of pretty papers: a record of the colours hidden in the plants around you.
A final thought
Eco printing makes you look at leaves differently.
A brown oak leaf on the ground is no longer simply garden waste. A fading rose leaf might contain colour you cannot see. Even a plant that produces almost no print teaches you something.
And there is always that small moment of anticipation when the string comes off and you open a new bundle.
Sometimes the result is bold.
Sometimes it is barely there.
But no two prints are ever quite the same.
