There’s something magical about filling your home with the scent of the season — especially when it’s completely natural. I love creating simmer pots around this time of year; they’re simple, inexpensive, and transform your space into a cosy, fragrant haven. Whether it’s a rainy autumn afternoon or a frosty December morning, a simmer pot is a wonderful way to bring warmth and comfort into your home.

What Is a Simmer Pot?
A simmer pot, also known as a stovetop potpourri, is a blend of natural ingredients, such as fruits, herbs, and spices, that gently release their fragrance when simmered in water. Unlike candles or artificial sprays, simmer pots are all-natural and can be tailored to your mood or the season.
All you need is a small saucepan, water, and a few simple ingredients from your kitchen. Let it gently simmer, topping up the water as it evaporates, and enjoy hours of uplifting scent.
My Favourite Seasonal Blends
Here are three easy simmer pot recipes I use throughout the autumn and Christmas seasons. Each blend captures a distinct aspect of the season, ranging from bright, citrusy freshness to warm, festive spice.

1. Orange & Clove Comfort
A timeless combination that smells just like Christmas baking.
You’ll need:
1 orange, sliced
1 tablespoon whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Scent profile: Warm, sweet, and nostalgic — like mulled wine and festive biscuits.
2. Pine & Rosemary Freshness
Perfect for those who love the “just cut tree” scent.
You’ll need:
A few sprigs of fresh pine or rosemary
1 bay leaf
4 juniper berries (optional)
2 lemon slices
Scent profile: Fresh, resinous, and grounding: a walk in the winter woods.
3. Festive Spice & Citrus Glow
For that all-round Christmas atmosphere.
You’ll need:
½ apple, sliced
1 orange, sliced
2 cinnamon sticks
1 star anise
A small piece of fresh ginger
Scent profile: Zesty, spicy, and deeply comforting.
How to Use Your Simmer Pot
Add your chosen ingredients to a small saucepan.
Fill the pot halfway with water and bring it to a gentle simmer.
Reduce the heat and let it release its scent slowly.
Top up the water as needed.
You can reuse the same mix for 1–2 days — simply cover and refrigerate between uses.
Tip: If you’d like to keep it going all day, use a small electric warmer or candle warmer plate instead of the hob — a great, safe option when you’re busy or entertaining.
Why I Love Simmer Pots
Aside from their wonderful aroma, simmer pots are a sustainable way to reuse kitchen leftovers, such as citrus peels, apple cores, or herbs past their prime. They’re free from synthetic fragrances and make a lovely, eco-friendly alternative to candles or plug-ins.
I often make small jars of dried simmer pot blends as gifts too, simple, natural, and perfect for the season.
